Bipolar UK – the national charity dedicated to supporting individuals with the much-misunderstood condition of bipolar disorder – is delighted to announce the appointment of BAFTA award-winning actor, rapper, writer and director, Adam Deacon, as its latest Ambassador.

Adam’s acting career began with guest appearances in Bill's New Frock, Shooters, Ali G Indahouse and The Bill, he also starred in the ITV drama Wall Of Silence in 2004. His breakthrough came when he landed a starring role in the urban drama film Kidulthood. He then worked on a number of other projects until 2011, including the sequel Adulthood, 4.3.2.1. and the one-off television pilot West 10 LDN.

Adam co-wrote, co-directed and played the lead role in urban comedy Anuvahood which grossed over £1m in box office receipts. Following this, Time Out magazine labelled Adam "The New Face of Youth Cinema". In February 2012, he won the BAFTA Rising Star Award.

Adam has since appeared in many lead and supporting roles in feature films, including Bonded by Blood, Jack Falls, Shank, Everywhere and Nowhere and Payback Season. He had a guest role in Victim. In November 2012, he co-hosted the Music of Black Origin Awards telecast with Miquita Oliver where Deacon played a comical part in the awards.

Adam can currently be seen in Rogue as the leading villain. The feature film, in which he stars alongside Megan Fox and Philip Winchester is available on demand via Amazon Prime Video.

Speaking of his role with Bipolar UK, Adam comments:

“I’m very passionate about normalising the conversation around bipolar disorder in particular and mental health in general.  I went through many years of pain because I was so scared of the stigma. I feel for the many men and women going through this thinking they are alone. They are not.”

“You cannot wait until things get out of control. You need to get help before things get too extreme. I feel my experience is similar to those going through bipolar, I want to empower others who, especially in lockdown, will be going through similar challenges that I’ve been through.”

“Through my work with Bipolar UK, I feel we can start by encouraging others to speak openly about their experiences, challenges and triumphs. Whilst you cannot cure bipolar disorder, with the right support and self-help you can live quite successfully with the condition.”

Simon Kitchen, CEO of Bipolar UK, comments

As a social movement for change we are delighted that Adam has chosen to donate his time and expertise to Bipolar UK. We are the charity of second chances and whilst we realise that Adam has had his very public challenges, he has come out the other side of them bolstered by his resolve that you can live with the condition with the right support. His enthusiasm for breaking down the stigma around mental illness because of his own personal journey will be invaluable to those lives he will touch.

We are excited to be working together to make a tangible difference through the various support services that empower those living with or affected by the condition.”

As the only national charity dedicated to empowering individuals and families affected by bipolar disorder, Bipolar UK offers a range of resources and services for people affected by bipolar. This includes a moderated eCommunity, one-to-one support by telephone and email, and peer support groups for people affected by bipolar, facilitated by trained and supported volunteers.
