A revised Mental Health Code of Practice came into effect on 1st April, replacing their 2008 version.

Front cover of the Code of Practice

The Code shows professionals how to carry out their duties under the Mental Health Act 1983 and provide high quality safe care.

The revised Code of Practice seeks to provide stronger protection for patients subject to the Mental Health Act and clarify roles, rights and responsibilities.

The changes to the Code include:

  • Involving patients in discussions about their care at every stage
  • Involving families and carers in discussions about care as appropriate
  • Providing personalised care
  • Minimising inappropriate blanket restrictions, restrictive interventions and the use of police cells as places of safety.

The revised Code is available online, along with a new reference guide, impact assessment and easy read version of the Code.
