‘I wanted to help everyone to get that happy ending’

I decided to fundraise for Bipolar UK as it is an important charity working on a cause very close to my heart. In 2022 I lost my best friend, Megan, to the devastating effects of bipolar.

However, that wasn't the first time I had encountered someone close to me being diagnosed with bipolar, as my brother, Tony, was diagnosed in 2013. Since then, he has had a few hospital stays, but ultimately now lives a happy, full life.

For me, it would be great for everyone to get that happy ending and Bipolar UK is working towards the same goal.

It seemed like a nice way to honour Megan’s memory

I chose to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon mainly because I thought it would be a good challenge. I am not a natural runner, although my friend Megan was!

It seemed like a nice way to honour her memory while fundraising and raising awareness for such an important cause.

The day of the half marathon started with tonnes of nerves and ended with relief and happiness! The crowds were great, friends came out to support, and I even had strangers encouraging me along. I thought running the half marathon would be quite a struggle, but the atmosphere and sense of achievement made it very enjoyable.

Research and support for people with bipolar is crucial

I felt a great sense of achievement after the race, but was also grateful I was able to raise some money for Bipolar UK. I believe research and support for people with bipolar is crucial.

I have experienced firsthand how devastating the impact of bipolar can be, but also seen how it is possible for someone with bipolar to fulfil their potential. Bipolar UK is trying to help make it a reality that one day everyone can have that happy, full life.

The event has encouraged me to try and do more similar activities in the future. For anyone considering fundraising for Bipolar UK, I’d say go for it! It’s such an important cause and could really help people.
